Don't Say the Same Thing Twice

Title cards explain that what a person likes and the way he likes it reveals his character. There are long glimpses of shapes and rhythms. The film begins and ends with the sea: the incoming tide, small breakers running up on a beach. Rocks appear in the first movement, light and darkness play on the water. Rodakiewicz's film is an ongoing meditation on the medium itself and an early example of an absolute film on the other side of the Atlantic, after the genre of cinéma pur on this side of the Atlantic began to stagnate in the late 1920s. As a supporting film, we will show the film "Rain" by the Dutch director Joris Ivens, a film that has attracted a great deal of attention, not least because of its treatment in Adorno's work on film music.

The determined goal of the absolute film is to find a new film language, namely one that is unique to the medium of film. The film is not to be oriented towards theatre or narrative literature, but rather towards poetry and music. The latter leads to a split relationship to the question of musical accompaniment. Originally, Rodakiewicz had considered setting the film to music, but then decided that a musical accompaniment would only say the same thing twice. In this sense, the task of the IOIC Improvisers Orchestra can be formulated as a director's request: Don't say the same thing twice!
