The character of Fantômas, the criminal without a face, the unidentifiable culprit, appeared in 1911 in a vast series of detective novels and laid the foundations for the figure of the super-villain, who would not become the superhero's adversary until a few years later. Beyond a moral or social reparation that would have marked the end of the series, Fantômas escapes all logic and deduction. It is therefore not surprising that this character, who breaks with all moral and social conventions and to whom Louis Feuillade paid tribute in a series of five films, became one of the darlings of the Surrealists.
