The comedies of early cinema present a kaleidoscope of bizarre ideas, wild fever dreams, and anarchic mind games and testify to a close relationship between the language of dreams and the language of film. We present six comedies from the years 1906 to 1910, some of which have recently been newly digitised.
The films are set to music by vocalist Frankziska Baumann, double bassist John Edwards and percussionist Julian Sartorius, who as a trio break new ground by using articulation organs, bass, percussion and live electronics to juggle high-energy sequences and subtle textures in a stream of music that is both immaterial and physical.
