The Cinema of the Revolution

"Even now I feel again the emotions that the film aroused in all of us. When we left the cinema, we started to build barricades ourselves. The police had to intervene before we could stop." (Luis Buñuel, Mon dernier soupir)

Repeatedly declared the greatest film of all time, but also repeatedly largely censored for fear of the supposed influence of its ideas, the film tells the story in five parts of a naval mutiny in 1905 that leads to a full-blown revolution. While in other hands this material might degenerate into clumsy propaganda, Eisenstein uses images of such dynamic compositional power and editing of such edge-of-your-seat precision that it is impossible not to be swept along.

This classic of Soviet revolutionary cinema is set to music by two enfants terribles of free improvisation, jazz-punk and drone music who have come to the Zwingl city from the East and the West and who are now coming together for the first time as a duo: alto saxophonist Anton Ponomarev from Moscow and bassist and electronic musician Frédéric Minner from Kalvingrad.
