A Postmodern Riff on German Expressionism

Paul Leni's The Last Warning (1928) - one of the last silent films Universal produced - is something of a postmodern riff on the whole idea of German Expressionism, and it was his last film before he died of blood poisoning eight months later at the age of forty-four. Today Paul Leni is an unjustly neglected figure even among silent film aficonados and it seems urgent to exhume him as a master of the exuberant style of late silent film.

The creepy horror story is set to music by singer and harpist Linda Vogel, who expands the sound spectrum of her instrument by using effect pedals and new playing techniques. Together with drummer Vincent Glanzmann and custom-made mechanical harp triggers, she creates sounds and moods that are punctuated by driving and incisive rhythms.
