In the Sea (Cello, Voice, Violin, Double Bass)
The city symphony is a film genre of the 1920s and 30s combining elements of documentary and narrative film. The city is not a mere background, instead, the metropolis and urban modernity itself become protagonists. Besides the well-known examples of symphonies of metropolises like New York, Paris, Berlin, and Moscow there are many other similar films which fell into oblivion. The programme «Sea City Symphonies» presents four of these less-known films, where the directors Joris Ivens, Henri Storck, László Moholo-Nagy, and Jean Vigo turn their «kino-eyes», i.e. the camera lens on smaller and larger sea cities such as Rotterdam, Ostende, Marseille and Nizza.
The IOIC and Misterioso Jazz Club show the films with new live scores by the Dutch-Canadian string trio «In the Sea» with the legendary cello player Tristan Honsinger, one of the great musicians of free jazz and free improvisation and best known for his long-running collaboration with giants like Cecil Taylor and Derek Bailey. Along with him will play the violinist Joshua Zubot and the double bassist Nicolas Caloia.
